June 26 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Guest Speaker + Open Mic
On Thursday, June 26, the public are invited to attend a free event celebrating the power of poetry to create community and explore topics of the heart. First, we’ll welcome poet, musician, artist and teacher Annie Humphrey to share her powerful voice. Then, we’ll open the mic to all for the remainder of the evening. Join us at the Marine Village Hall, 121 Judd Street, Marine on St. Croix, MN.
If you’d like to read/perform, you will be allotted 3 minutes. Please plan accordingly so everyone has a turn to share their voice. Sign up will take place onsite.
Annie Humphrey
Growing up on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota, Annie lived in a home filled with voices made of thunder and nothing could stop it. Her parents were brilliant people individually. Her father, a singer and musician and her mother, an artist and poet. Together they made sadness. Each of her parents taught Annie the beautiful things they knew. They showed her that she carried their gifts in her hands too. This is how creating art and music came about for her. This is what saved her. This is how she lives now.
Things my dad taught me:
skin a deer, set net, clean fish, make maple syrup, harvest wild rice, play basketball, ride motorcycle, go without if you can’t afford it, play guitar
Things my mom taught me: draw, paint, sew, write, laugh, wonder, forgive
Alongside her musical talent, Annie Humphrey is also an accomplished artist and painter.
Annie has been working with youth on and off the rez for twenty years. In the short time Annie spends in the classrooms she teaches students music, poetry and how to create visual works of art and present it to their families and communities. She believes that art and music can be expressive and healing for youth.
Annie is also available to design and paint murals with students within the school or the communities.
Annie has 4 children and 2 grandsons. She has a handsome, Indian, horseman husband. They inspire her spirit and her art.
Arrow Broken Poetry Collective is a new organization (estab. 2025) led by Rosetta (Rosie) Peters, Suzi Hudson and Kate Seitz. Their working mission is to lead writing groups, outreach and education, and monthly poetry reading and open mic events in the St. Croix Valley.
